The Planning Accreditation Board (PAB) accredits university programs in North America leading to bachelors and masters degrees in planning. The accreditation process is based on standards approved by the PAB and its sponsoring organizations: the American Planning Association (APA); the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) (the professional planners' institute within the American Planning Association); and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP). Accreditation results from the PAB’s review of programs’ self-study reports and supplementary reports prepared by an on-site team of peer reviewers. The standards the PAB uses to assess programs encourage them to provide a high quality education to the planning profession’s future practitioners. The PAB grants accreditation for a maximum seven-year term, though shorter accreditation terms may be granted. Click here to view more information about the PAB. In South Carolina, Clemson University is the only school that currently possesses PAB accreditation .Click here to view more information about Clemson University's Department of Planning & Landscape Architecture. Although not accredited by the PAB, several other institutions of higher education offer planning related programs. Click here to view planning related education links. SC Planning and Zoning Continuing Education Requirements All SCAPA Conference sessions are approved for continuing education required by SC Code 6-29-1310 et. seq., Educational Requirements for Local Government Planning or Zoning Officials or Employees. The state requires three hours per year for staff and Board and Commission members. Anyone who attends a SCAPA conference may request a confirmation of completion for the sessions attended. SCAPA will provide the confirmation in the form of a certificate of attendance within a few weeks of the conference. AICP Certification Maintenance The AICP Commission approved mandatory certification maintenance in Philadelphia at the APA National Conference in April 2007 and the certification maintenance process is currently in development. The details of the program will be finalized by the end of the year and certification maintenance requirements will become mandatory on January 1, 2008. AICP credentialed planners should retain a record of SCAPA sessions attended between April and December 2007. All 2007 SCAPA conference sessions will be submitted to apa for aicp Certification Maintenance credit approval. SCAPA sessions approved by AICP for CM credits will be eligible for recording in 2008.
